Heat is the biggest reason a porta potty turns unpleasant in the Coachella Valley. A hot unit smells sooner, fills faster on a thirsty crew and runs out of sanitizer quicker. These steps keep a unit usable from June through September.
How hot does it get in Indio in the summer?
Indio summer heat is extreme: the normal daily high is about 107 degrees Fahrenheit in July and 106 degrees in August, based on NOAA climate normals for Indio. June and September highs also top 100 degrees. A porta potty in full sun gets hotter inside than the outside air.
Heat speeds up the breakdown of waste in the tank, and that is what makes odor. Heat also dries out deodorizer faster. You can check local forecasts and heat warnings from the National Weather Service San Diego office, which covers the Coachella Valley.
Where should a porta potty go in summer heat?
A porta potty should go in the shade on the north or east side of a building in summer, because those spots miss the hottest afternoon sun after 2pm. Shade can keep a unit noticeably cooler inside. The service truck still needs to park close to the unit, so pick shade the truck can reach.
- Use the shadow of a house, block wall, container or garage.
- Turn the door away from the west so afternoon sun does not hit the entry.
- Avoid black asphalt if a dirt, gravel or concrete pad is close by.
- Keep tree branches clear of the roof vent so heat and odor can escape.
Do not trade truck access for shade. A shaded unit the truck cannot reach will miss its weekly service, and that is worse than sun.
How often should a porta potty be serviced in summer?
Every Zid Portable Services rental includes weekly service, where the porta potty is pumped, cleaned and restocked. In Coachella Valley summer heat, busy sites often need a second weekly service. A standard unit holds a 60-gallon tank, and heavy summer use can fill it before the next visit.
The table below is our guideline for summer use. It is based on how hard the unit is used, not on a law.
| Summer use | Example | Our service guideline |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Homeowner remodel, 1 to 3 workers | Weekly service is usually enough |
| Moderate | Small crew working 5 days | Weekly service; add a visit during heat waves |
| Heavy | Large crew, 6-day weeks, or farm crews | Twice a week, or add a second unit |
| Event | Weekend party or outdoor gathering | Delivered clean before the event; ask about extra service for multi-day events |
Call us if the tank looks more than about half full before service day. Extra service visits are added to your bill as their own line.
What time of day is best for porta potty service in summer?
Morning is the best time for porta potty service in Coachella Valley summer heat. Zid Portable Services runs routes Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm. A morning service means the unit starts the hottest part of the day freshly pumped, cleaned and restocked.
We cannot promise an exact time, but you can ask for an early spot on the route. For a weekend event, plan for the unit to be serviced or delivered before the weekend, not during it.
How do you control porta potty odor in hot weather?
Porta potty odor in hot weather comes down to 4 things. They are shade, a clear roof vent, enough deodorizer and service before the tank gets too full. Keep the lid down. Keep trash out of the tank. Both steps cut odor on hot days.
- Keep the lid closed between uses.
- Keep the door shut so flies stay out.
- Put a trash can outside the unit so cups, wipes and bottles stay out of the tank.
- Do not pour water, soda or ice into the tank. Extra liquid dilutes the deodorizer and fills the tank.
- Call for extra service if odor gets strong before service day.
For guests who expect more, a deluxe flushing unit with a sink keeps the bowl cleaner between uses.
Do you need hand sanitizer or a hand washing station in summer?
Summer sites need both hand sanitizer and a hand washing station when crews or guests are sweaty and dusty. Sanitizer does not clean dirt off hands well. Our PolyJohn Bravo class hand washing station holds 22 gallons of fresh water and the manufacturer rates it at about 350 uses per fill.
Event units come with hand sanitizer. On a busy summer job, the sanitizer and soap run out faster, so they are restocked at each service. Tell us if you run low between visits.
Water in a hand washing station warms up in the sun, so shade helps here too. See our hand washing station rental page for setup tips.
How does summer heat affect jobsite crews and restrooms?
Summer heat makes crews drink more water, and more water means more porta potty use. Cal/OSHA's heat illness rule, Title 8 Section 3395, requires employers to provide water and shade for outdoor workers, with shade required when the temperature passes 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A nearby, clean unit supports that plan.
Workers who dread a hot, dirty toilet may drink less water. That is a safety risk in the desert. Read the rule on the Cal/OSHA heat illness prevention page.

Summer checklist for a porta potty rental
A summer porta potty checklist has 6 steps. Pick shade the truck can reach, and turn the door away from the west. Add a hand washing station and keep trash out of the tank. Ask for morning service, and call for extra service before the 60-gallon tank fills.
Book summer units early in the week when you can. Same-day delivery is offered, but call early in the day. Reach Zid Portable Services at (442) 383-2625.
